About the Tool

This tool will help you create some of the documents you will need to secure the permissions you may require if you are wanting to make changes to your building or its surroundings. For many denominations these are called Statements of Significance and Need.

The Statement of Significance captures the information about your building and site which help those involved to understand and manage it well. If this is completed ahead of any project planning, it will help you to make informed choices about the pros and cons of any changes you later plan.

For major Christian denominations covered by Ecclesiastical Exemption this process sits alongside the secular planning system and Listed Building Consent. The output that this tool offers will answer the questions in the ecclesiastical part of that process. For other denominations and other faiths, permission is granted through the secular planning process. This tool will help you to gather the information you need to create the Heritage Statements that local authorities require.

Frequently asked questions

How do I get started?

To begin creating Statements of Significance and Need you need to register for an account on this website. This requires you to provide your name and an email address that will be used to verify your account.

Once you have an account and have logged in, you will be able to create and manage your Statements via the 'My Statements' menu link.

If you have any issues creating or accessing your account, please contact us at heritage360@york.ac.uk.

What preparation do I need to do?

We'd recommend that you do some general preparation prior to creating your Statement. This should ideally include reading our Resources and links section, and perhaps gathering and reviewing the available information about your building.

However, the Statements are designed to be created over time - you can start a Statement, save it, then return to it after undertaking more research or speaking to collaborators or experts.

How do Statements of Significance and Need relate?

This tool allows you to create both Statements of Significance and Statements of Need.

A Statement of Significance details your building's importance in terms of its environment, context and features in general terms. A Statement of Need focuses on particular aspects in relation to a specific piece of work you wish to undertake.

When using this tool, you must create a Statement of Significance before you can create Statements of Need. Statements of Need can only be created and accessed via their parent Statement of Significance.

Can others help me create a Statement?

Yes, you can get others to help you create Statements via our 'Collaborators' facility.

Each Statement has a 'creator' - usually the person who initiates creation via the 'Create a new Statement...' buttons. We encourage users not to share accounts/passwords, but instead create additional accounts for collaborators, who can then be added to Statements. Once someone has created an account and has been added to a Statement, they can access and edit that statement just like the creator.

To add someone as a collaborator to your Statement, ensure they have created an account and then click the 'Edit statement details' button on your Statement - the 'Collaborators' section is the last step in that section.

Although we test this website frequently, sometimes bugs and errors can creep through. If you encounter any issues, please contact us at heritage360@york.ac.uk and:

  1. provide your name, email address, the church/location and Statement type (Significance / Need) you're working on
  2. explain what the issue is and where you encountered it
  3. detail the steps you took before encountering the error
  4. send screenshots if helpful

We'll try to get the problems fixed as soon as possible!

Should I update my Statement of Significance?

In short, yes! A Statement of Significance is intended to be a document that is revised and kept as up-to-date as possible. If things change in or around your building, or if new information about the building's past or significance come to light, consider updating your Statement to reflect this.

When creating a Statement of Need, it is also a good idea to review your Statement of Significance at the same time to ensure it accurately reflect the current state of your building and its surroundings.

Who owns the copyright to my Statement?

All the text and images that you create or upload as part of the creation of your Statements belong to you, and you alone. Heritage360 and University of York, who own and operate this website, do not retain any copyright or IPR rights over your content.

However, there may be times where we might wish to reuse some or all of your content - for example, if we feel that your statement would make a good example for others to follow, or as part of materials to promote this tool more widely. In these circumstances we will always ask your permission first, and your content will appear alongside an attribution agreed between yourselves and us. You of course have the right to refuse part or all of these requests.

Who can access my Statements?

Your Statements are accessible only by you and the named collaborators that you add. Other users of the Statements of Significance and Need Online Creation Tool cannot access your Statements.

Heritage360, who operate this website, also have access to your Statements for maintenance and trouble-shooting purposes. We can also help you regain access to your Statements if you ever find yourself locked out - see the question below!

I can't get access to my Statements anymore - help!

We understand that account login details can sometimes get lost - especially given that some Statements may not be accessed frequently, or may need to be accessed by different people. In these cases you can usually regain access by the following methods:

  1. If you've lost your password, please use our password reset facility. This is also accessible via the standard 'Sign in' page.
  2. If you've forgotten the email address that you used to create your account, please contact us at heritage360@york.ac.uk.
